Puppy Raising & Head Start
"Retrievers are born with a natural tendency to retrieve - that tendency needs to be patiently and consistently escalated into desire. The methods in which we introduce the puppy to water, hunting, gunfire and other environmental factors will prove to either encourage or discourage desire... and many times we only have one shot to get it right". -Dave Donahue
Macomo Kennels can help you get your youngin' started the right way.
Young retrievers create bad habits through faulty, inconsistent teachings and improper socialization that do not consider later training, performance, or interaction requirements. Retrieve desire, que words, and retrieving mechanics can all be introduced at a very young age; allowing the pup to mature into their job. Every situation a young retriever finds themselves in is training and our ability to focus on these fine details creates results.
Preparation for the future rigors of training and hunting is our business. We have a bullet-proof plan of approach for proper socialization and teaching our pupil's to have Focus, Momentum, an Established Hunt Pattern, and Desire.
- Owner Friendly: Who wants to buy a pup and never see it? We encourage your attendance and participation and will even work with you to schedule time during training to have the pup home! The best of both worlds.
- Socialization: There is quite possibly a no more important task for your new puppy than proper socialization. Your young pup will grow to be a powerful, capable adult in a relatively short period of time and the manner in which they relate to other dogs, people, changing environments, and you - could not be placed higher on the priority list.
- Fair Price: Our puppy head-start program begins as early as 8 weeks of age and continues to 6 months of age - or the point which we feel the dog is ready for formal training. $450/month. (Includes boarding, training, feeding, Flea/Tick/Heartworm preventative and birds.) We feed Purina Pro Plan Focus Puppy Large Breed until dog is 6 months of age, at which time we transition to Purina Pro Plan Sport 30/20.
